Sapphire is an exceptionally hard and tough mineral - the third-hardest one in the world after Diamond and Moisanite.
Sapphire is a variety of Corundum which is found as a primary mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Due to its toughness, high hardness and chemical resistance, Sapphire persists in sediments long after other minerals have been eroded and destroyed. This is why Corundum is often found in alluvial deposits. Traditional sources of include Burma, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India, Afghanistan, Montana and other areas. Recently several parts of Africa, including Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Malawi have also become important producers.
Corundum is best known for its gemstone varieties - Ruby and Sapphire - which are scientifically the same mineral, just different in color. Ruby is the red variety and Sapphire is the variety that encompasses all other colors, although the most popular and valued color of Sapphire is blue. Sapphire is also only used to describe the gemstone variety; otherwise it is simply called Corundum.
