Purchase includes information about the metaphysical properties of pearls, and how to use and care for them.
Due to their organic origin, pearls are not a “true” mineral or stone. They’re globular cysts of calcium carbonate (mainly aragonite or a mixture of aragonite and calcite) that form within the tissues of molluscs as nacre (a protective coating) as a result of a small internal irritant such as a grain of sand. Concentric layers of nacre give pearls a subtle iridescence which is called “pearlescence”. Most pearls on the market today don't occur naturally but are cultured by inserting an artificial irritant into the mollusc shell to create the pearl.
Cultured and natural pearls come in many shapes and colours. Colours range from a soft iridescent white with hints of pink or grey, to an iridescent black with tones of green blue or violet.
Shapes of pearls can be round, irregular (baroque), oval or rice, flat on one side (button), freeform (keishi)and freshwater biwa or stick.
