Dog Grass Root (Triticum Repens)
Dog grass is a prolific, fast spreading plant original to Eurasia but now inhabits nearly every corner of the world as a wayside weed and foraging crop. The herb may be the bane of many gardeners, but it has a place in the home and shop apothecary as an ingredient in herbal tea blends and bath and body products.
Origin: Albania
Active Compounds: Mucilage, triticin, mannitol, inositol, albumin, phenolcarboxylic acids , vanilloside, vanillin, silicates, silicic acid, agropyrene, thymol, menthol, iron and other minerals.
Plant Part Used: Root
Storage Tips: Store in a sealed container at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
Appearance and Aroma: Light green with a grassy appearance and aroma.
Cosmetic Uses: Use strong infusions of dog grass root for a therapeutic bath or apply as a warm poultice. The root may also be made into a topical spray or infused in oil for use in salves, ointments and creams.
Culinary Uses: Prepare as tea, alone or in combination with other herbs. Maybe added to smoothies and shakes.
Flavor Profile: Mild and slightly sweet. Suitable partners in tea blends include thyme, oregano, yarrow and corn silk.
Wellness Uses: May be encapsulated as a dietary supplement.
Safety: No known precautions or herb-drug interactions. However, in theory, this herb may increase the effects of diuretics and certain medications, such as anti-diabetes drugs. Consult your health care practitioner before using this herb if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have a chronic condition for which you take prescription medications.
